Rental Vehicle Protection with Your Credit Card
Rental vehicles
Major credit card brands have plans and benefits for their customers, including protection in case of damage to a rental vehicle.
To take advantage of its benefits, we recommend the next steps:
- Check your card benefits
Before reserving your vehicle, contact your bank or your brand's customer service center directly and consult the limits of protection of the rental vehicle.
For this you should verify if the program covers 4x4 vehicles in Costa Rica and review options of excluded vehicles, for example: sports, classic and passenger minibuses; also, the limit amount covered in extreme situations such as total loss or theft of the rental vehicle.
- Get a confirmation document
Once you have verified the scope of your benefits, request or download a document that supports this information, showing the name of the card holder, validating the active benefit and the term of protection you have for rentals in Costa Rica.
At the time of reserving your rental vehicle, let us know that you have these benefits and that you wish to apply them to your rental period. With this you will be informed in time about the policies of the designated rental company and their responsibilities in case of damage to the rental vehicle.
- Considerations when picking up the vehicle
You must take into account that the regulations of the official car rental companies in Costa Rica require that the car rental companies have an active policy for damages to the property of third parties and are not obliged to validate protections issued outside Costa Rica.
When you pick up the rental vehicle, you must present your credit card with the previously verified benefits to make the guarantee deposit, linked to the rental contract. The payment corresponding to the requested service must be made with the same credit card.
During the rental period drive under the speed limits and use safe parking spaces for the vehicle and your belongings. Please note that damages due to carelessness and mistreatment may be excluded from your benefits.
- In case of an accident
In case of an accident that causes damage to the rental vehicle, make a report to the rental company, the police and even the vehicle's insurance company in Costa Rica. Describe the precise location and keep photographs containing the license plate number of the car and copies of the documents with the description of the incident.
- Follow the process to claim benefits
Agree with the rental company the procedure, contacts responsible for the follow-up of the case and proceed to activate the claim with the customer service of your credit card benefit program.
The above are tips that may help you with the process, do not hesitate to inquire further with your credit card programs as there may be variations in the protocol by credit card brands and car rental companies.
