Pura Vida: Costa Rica's Positive Outlook On Life

Posted on

The Costa Rican national expression "pura vida", associated with a sense of well-being, positivity, and gratitude, is much more than just a motto.  If you visit Costa Rica, you'll undoubtedly encounter the catchphrase at some point, whether on the colorful, hand-painted signs ubiquitous throughout the country or when friendly staff welcome you to any restaurant, hotel, or shop.  It's so deeply ingrained in the local culture that, in November 2023, the phrase was included for the first time in the global dictionary of Spanish compiled by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE).

According to the RAE's definition, it can describe a person as pleasant or friendly, or be related to good health.  It can also express agreement, describe something good, or serve as a greeting or farewell.  However, for Costa Ricans, it's much more than that: it's a shared identity, a feeling of optimism, and an exceptionally positive outlook on life.  According to Víctor Sánchez, a linguistics professor at the University of Costa Rica and president of the Costa Rican Language Association, “pura vida” is absolutely part of the Costa Rican ethos and identity, having organically become an integral part of the country's brand.

The small Central American country, with a population of just five million, regularly receives around three million visitors a year.  Most visitors are initially drawn by the stunning natural beauty, but then their focus shifts to the “ticos” (Costarican) perspective, particularly the positive side of things and what's truly important in life, such as family, friends, and nature.  It's very common to hear visitors say that Costa Rica feels different, that everything seems simpler, and that it inspires a change in perspective on the world around us.

That is why it is not surprising that foreigners feel strangely drawn to this positively addictive outlook on life, so much so that many return time and again, and others simply decide to immigrate and enjoy “pura vida” full-time.  Ultimately, Costa Rica's breathtaking nature and vibrant energy leave a lasting impression, and reliving that experience becomes more than just a pleasure trip.  Whether it's your first or twentieth visit to the country, once you experience "pura vida", you won't want to live any other way.  You've been warned!
